Today you are going to do your last task.

But first, do a look to this wikipedia article. You have 10 minutes to read the part than you prefer, or if you want, you can read some other articles linked to this.

Afer answer this questions, you will start your task.

You are a character in the Iberian Reconquista. If you are a Christian, you are moving to the Kingdom of Valencia, which is now being conquered. If you are a Musilim,  you are in this Kingdom, but if you are a Jewish, you can choose if you are moving to it, or if you live there.

You have to write the Story of you character, how is he or she living this facts. You have to include the knowledges than you have learnt doing this Unit.

Your text should have at least two pages, and and everyone is going to publish his or her medieval Story in the Group’s blog. If you want, you can add some historical images in order to illustrate your character life, but remember, the images must be historical, not recent! 

Here you have some questions to help you. You must consider them to organize your text:
- Where and where were you born? Which was your status and how was your life?
- Why you decided to go to the Kingdom of Valencia? Did you participate on the war? Why?
-  It was easy living in Valencia? Did you have problems with other cultures?

The expansion of the Iberian 

Medieval Kingdoms II

Today we will start the classe watching a short video about a

battle, Las navas de Tolosa. 

Battles were something common in the Middle Ages, 

specially in a frontier area, like the Iberian Peninsula, where

the conflicts between the different kingdoms (Musilims and 

Christians) were common.

This kind of life, was extended to art and music. One of the 

most important examples are the “Cantigas de Santa Maria”.

They where short histories about Saint Mary and how she 

helped the Christians in many times, specially in war times.

Here you have an example.

Now is your turn, in the next link, you have some examples 

with different episodes from Las Cantigas. You can read it 

and finally choose one.

Some of the Cantigas

After choosing one Cantiga, you are going to translate it and 

make a short video. Don’t worry if you don’t translate it 

perfectly, the important is to reproduce the main meaning of 

every picture.

When you have the transaltion, you have to download the 

pictures, and if you wont, you can try to find its music. With 

this material and using the  programme Photo History, you 

have to reproduce the Cantiga. You must combine the 

Images and the text, and if you want you can add the music.

When you have finish the activity, you have to send it to me. 

After that, is the time to play.

Using the game  “atWar”, I have made for you a new 

version.

With my Premium Count, I have created a Scenario similar to

the Reconquista. In groups of 6, you will play this game. 

There are 6 factions with diferent objectives:

- Castile: expand to the South (Sevilla, Murcia)

- Crown of Aragon:  expand to the South (Valencia, Murcia)

- Portogal:  expand to the South (Algarve, Sevilla)

- Musilims I: resist to the Christians during 10 turns and 

control Cordova.

- Musilims II:  resist to the Christians during 10 turns and control Cordova.

As you can see, you can be in troubles easily with the rest of 

factions, but if you want to win, you have to combine the war 

an the diplomacy with the other players. If you play well, you 

will see some of the difficulties that the Medieval Kingdoms 

had.

Here in Valencia, we are living in a Kindgdom which was 

born in the middle of this phenomenon. What do you know 

about it? First of all, you have 5 minutes to do a short 

questionarie about your knowledges about your History!
